Rosenhaven - the Rose Garden in Mariager

    0.56 km

Rosenhaven contains roses of all sizes, colours and scents from all over the world. There are ancient roses, as well as the latest trends in roses. The shrub rose, Rosa X Sancta, which adorns some of the garden’s many rose arches, is the oldest known cultivated rose. This type of rose was found in Egyptian burials dating to around 170 BC. Over the centuries, the rose has also often been planted near churches and monasteries and its name means “the holy rose”, which is why it’s also associated with Mariager Abbey.

Amongst the more recent roses, many visitors will look forward to seeing the refined red rose, ”Our Last Summer”. This was created by the Danish rose breeder, Rosa Eskelund, and named by the rose enthusiast, Danish actress, Ghita Nørby, in 2013. The rose has won many international prizes and has become very popular, especially in Italy.

When the garden is in bloom, the 22 flower beds light up in a wealth of colours and unusual scents, including that of a rose crossed with an apple. There’s also a type of rose known as Bizar, which you can only see in Mariager Rosenhave!

The roses blossom from May until the frosts start. The rose garden covers an area of 2,000m2.

As the roses are planted in a system, in which they’re exhibited according to their historical context and species, the garden is also a rosarium. Its’ a place for romantic times, sitting and tranquillity, where you can read a book whilst enjoying the lovely scents.

Children are welcome – and if they get tired of looking at the roses, they can always run around in the attractive nature playground at Rosenhaven.

Hobro - Homestead of the Vikings

    11.28 km

Located at the innermost point of Mariager Fjord lies Hobro, one of North Jutland's oldest market towns. Hobro is the largest city in the municipality and a city full of life, commerce, and culture. Most notably, Hobro is known for the unique Viking fortress Fyrkat, which was erected a thousand years ago just a few kilometers west of present-day Hobro. In September 2023, the Viking fortress Fyrkat was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List for its significance as the center of political and social life in Viking society. Also located here is the Viking Center Fyrkat, a reconstructed Viking village with plenty of activities, primarily during school holiday periods.

In downtown Hobro, you will find a wonderful pedestrian street, with lots of shops and various kinds of entertainment. In the old brewery yard is Bies Gaard, where a new microbrewery is in the process of moving in, and which is still the home of the town’s art museum named Kunstetagerne.

At the harbour, new and old come together in a mix of history, atmosphere and culture. Today the old storehouses and historical buildings on the southern wharf are home to cafés, a theater, museum and a gallery, while the northern wharf still services freighters from around the world.

At the Pleasure Craft Museum (Lystfartøjsmuseet), you can see the boats that once sailed on the fjord, and farther down the harbour is the Gas Museum and the Maritime Culture Center, where there is finteresting maritime experiences in store for the whole family. The southern wharf is also home to the “paddle steamer” Svanen, which sails to Bramslev Bakker and Mariager throughout the summer.

Hobro offers a wealth of dining establishments and all kinds of lodging. Campgrounds and a hostel are close to town, and Hotel Amerika lies in the beautiful Hobro Østerskov.

The area around Hobro offers a wealth of different attractions and tours, both on foot, bicycle, and car, such as the World Map in Klejtrup, Bramslev Bakker, the Vintage Railway, Rold Skov, and more.

Rold Skov – Hiking, Mountain Biking and Nature Experiences in Himmerland

    16.15 km

Step beneath the treetops of Rold Skov and discover one of Denmark's largest forests. Deep woodland, bubbling springs, peaceful forest lakes and fascinating stories provide endless opportunities for hiking, cycling, mountain biking and outdoor adventures throughout the year.

    Explore Rold Skov on foot

Rold Skov is an ideal destination for anyone looking to experience the nature of Himmerland up close. A network of forest roads and paths runs through the woodland, with around 60 km of marked hiking trails offering everything from short walks to longer adventures through the varied landscape.

One of the classic experiences is the walk around Store Økssø. The approximately 3 km trail takes you around the atmospheric forest lake and is one of the popular walks in Rold Skov.

In the southern part of the forest, you can follow Røverruten – the Robbers' Route. This 5.1 km circular trail is one of the "Pearls of Hærvejen" and starts at Stabelpladsen in Arden. Along the way, the route passes places including Kærlighedsstien, Røverstuen, Hestegraven, Hvass Sø and Sortemosehus, combining beautiful scenery with stories of the people who have lived and travelled through the forest over the centuries.

Springs and lakes – the blue gems of Rold Skov

Water is one of the features that makes Rold Skov particularly special. The limestone-rich ground creates an exceptional concentration of abundant natural springs, and the area around Gravlev Ådal is home to some of Northern Europe's most water-rich springs.

Discover places such as Ravnkilde, Lille Blåkilde, Gravlev Kilde and Kovadsbæk, where crystal-clear spring water emerges from the ground and creates distinctive natural habitats. Store Blåkilde is another popular natural attraction in the area.

Several lakes are hidden among the trees, providing peaceful places to stop and enjoy the surroundings. Store Økssø is the best known, while lakes such as Hvass Sø offer tranquillity and a true woodland atmosphere. Together, the springs, streams, river valley and lakes are an essential part of the unique landscape in and around Rold Skov.

    Explore Rold Skov by bike

Rold Skov is also an excellent destination to explore by bicycle. The Hærvejen cycle route passes through the area, making it possible to combine a forest adventure with a longer cycling holiday through Himmerland and along Denmark's historic Hærvejen route.

For mountain bikers, Rold Skov is one of Denmark's major MTB destinations. The hilly terrain offers around 50 km of trails ranging from forest roads and flowing sections to technical singletrack, steep climbs and challenging descents. There is also a downhill track and an MTB skills area.

The forest also offers excellent opportunities for running and horse riding. Whether you arrive on foot, by bicycle, mountain bike or on horseback, there are plenty of ways to find your own adventure among the trees.

Stabelpladsen and Sortemosehus – a great starting point from Arden

In the southern part of Rold Skov, Stabelpladsen near Arden is an excellent starting point for a day outdoors. Facilities include parking, a natural playground, a campfire site and a dog forest. The area also offers good opportunities for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility to experience the forest.

Close to Stabelpladsen is Sortemosehus, a former forester's house that now serves as a nature centre, activity venue and Hærvejen hostel. It offers the opportunity to stay overnight close to nature and is located directly on both Røverruten and Hærvejen.

Around Arden, you can also combine your forest adventure with a visit to Arden Dyrepark, where families can get close to the fallow deer. Together with the area's natural playgrounds and other family-friendly nature spots, this makes the southern part of Rold Skov an excellent choice for a day out with children.

Discover the nature and stories of Rold Skov

Rold Skov is full of places waiting to be discovered. Look out for ancient, twisted beech trees, deep sinkholes, quiet forest lakes, bubbling springs, viewpoints, playgrounds and small natural gems that each reveal something about the landscape and history of the forest.

History is never far away. For centuries, Rold Skov has been associated with tales of robbers, poachers and charcoal burners. In the early 19th century, the area became notorious for gangs of robbers who attacked and robbed travellers on the roads through the dense forest. Today, these stories live on through places such as Røverstuen, the Røverruten trail and the many legends that add another dimension to a walk among the trees.

Nature with room for adventure and tranquillity

Rold Skov offers both action-packed experiences and quiet stretches of woodland where you can slow down and simply enjoy nature. Pack a picnic, find a natural playground or campfire site, stay overnight close to the forest or spend an entire day discovering springs, lakes, trails and hidden nature spots.

The forest lies between Skørping and Arden and is easy to reach by car or by train to either of the two towns. Several locations make excellent starting points for exploring the forest, including Store Økssø, Stabelpladsen and Rold Skov Trailcenter near Skørping.

Whether you're looking for a family day out, a peaceful hike, a cycling trip along Hærvejen or a mountain biking challenge, Rold Skov is a place where nature, outdoor activities and fascinating stories come together in the heart of Himmerland.

    Rold Skov

    18.73 km

    Rold Forest

Rold Skov is Denmark’s largest continuous forest and covers more than 80 km² – over 8,000 hectares. The forest is located close to Rebild Bakker and is an ideal place to explore nature all year round.

Here, you will find a varied landscape of forest, lakes, springs, streams, hills, old trees, sinkholes, historical traces and stories from legends, forestry and more recent Danish history. Rold Skov is not one uniform forest, but a mosaic of different woodland areas, each with its own distinctive character.

The forest is especially popular among hikers, cyclists, mountain bikers and nature lovers. Here you will find both short routes for a peaceful walk and longer trails for those who want to spend many hours in nature.

    Experience nature in Rold Skov

Rold Skov is known for its varied natural landscape. Here, you can walk through dark coniferous forests, old beech woods, open areas, hilly heathland, lake landscapes and spring areas. Beneath the forest floor lie thick layers of chalk and limestone, which help create some of the area’s most distinctive natural phenomena.

The limestone filters the rainwater before it emerges as clear spring water in the forest’s springs. At the same time, the groundwater’s slow dissolution of the limestone over thousands of years has created sinkholes – deep depressions in the landscape where underground cavities have collapsed.

In several places in the forest, you will also find old sunken roads, burial mounds and traces of life and work in the forest from earlier times.

The many faces of the forest

Rold Skov contains many different types of woodland and natural areas. In some places, beech trees dominate; in others, conifers take over, and several areas have their own special history.

    Troldeskoven

The beech is the original forest tree species in the area, and in Troldeskoven you will find the famous “røllebøge”. These are beech trees that have grown as multi-stemmed trees from the stump of a felled tree – an old form of woodland management known as coppicing.

Wind, weather and the trees’ genetic origin have given the røllebøge their crooked and almost troll-like appearance. Many of the trees are more than 300 years old and close to their maximum lifespan.

    Read more about Troldeskoven

    Urskoven

In Kyø Skov, also known as Urskoven, nature has been left to manage itself since 1850. The area is designated as untouched forest, where fallen trunks are left to lie and decay.

This creates good habitats for fungi, insects and cavity-nesting birds such as woodpeckers. The oldest trees in Urskoven are around 300 years old.

    Read more about Urskoven

    Jætternes Baghave

In the mid-1800s, fast-growing conifers from North America began to be introduced. This can be seen, among other places, in the area known as Jætternes Baghave, where you can experience impressive conifers, each with its own distinctive character.

Here you will find, among others:

    • Douglas fir, which can reach more than 50 metres into the air
    • Grand fir, also known as giant fir, which is known for its characteristic scent of orange when you rub the needles
    • Sitka spruce, a robust spruce that thrives in the damp climate of Himmerland

    Den Jyske Skovhave

Den Jyske Skovhave is a living tree museum, founded in the 1940s by forest supervisor Jens Hvass. Here you will find more than 150 different tree and shrub species from across the northern hemisphere.

This is also where you will find the dog forest Den Jyske Skovhave, Denmark’s first dog forest. Here, dogs may run freely under supervision.

A forest divided between the state and landowners

Rold Skov has a special ownership structure that has shaped the forest’s appearance over the centuries. Only around 25 percent of the forest – approximately 2,000 hectares – is owned by the state and managed by the Danish Nature Agency.

The remaining approximately 75 percent is privately owned and divided between three large estates:

    • Lindenborg Gods
    • Nørlund Gods
    • Willestrup Gods

Because Rold Skov consists of both state-owned and privately owned areas, access, signage and facilities may vary from place to place. It is therefore a good idea to plan your trip in advance and check routes, parking options and access conditions.

    Limestone, springs and sinkholes

The subsoil of Rold Skov consists of chalk and limestone deposited millions of years ago. The limestone is an important part of the explanation behind the forest’s springs, lakes, special plant life and sinkholes.

    The springs

The limestone layers function as a large natural filter. Rainwater seeps down through the ground, is purified on the way and later emerges as clear spring water.

Among the best-known springs in and around Rold Skov are:

    • Lille Blåkilde – despite its name, one of Denmark’s most water-rich springs, producing up to 90 litres of water per second. The water has a constant temperature of 7-8 degrees all year round.
    • Store Blåkilde – known for its deep blue colour, which is caused by the light limestone bed and the great depth of the water in the spring basin itself.
    • Ravnkilde – a famous seepage spring where water bubbles up in many places from a slope and runs down towards Lindenborg Å. Rare flora and fauna can be found here, including the rare spring water snail.

    Sinkholes

When groundwater dissolves the limestone underground over a long period of time, large cavities can form. If the roof of such a cavity collapses, a sinkhole is created.

In Rold Skov, you can experience, among others:

    • Røverstuen – one of the best-known sinkholes. According to legend, it was used as a hiding place by the notorious robbers of Rold.
    • Hestegraven – a deep, funnel-shaped hole that bears witness to the forces at work when limestone slowly breaks down.

    The lakes of Rold Skov

Rold Skov contains several lakes, and two of the most interesting are Store Økssø and Madum Sø. They are very different, but both are popular destinations for excursions.

    Store Økssø

Store Økssø is known for its tea-coloured water. The colour is caused by a high content of humic acids from the surrounding peat bogs. Today, the lake has been restored and is a popular place for swimming.

Around Store Økssø, there is a path of approximately 3 km, which goes all the way around the lake and is wheelchair accessible.

    Read more about Store Økssø

    Madum Sø

Madum Sø is located in the eastern part of Rold Skov. The lake is one of Denmark’s cleanest lobelia lakes, with crystal-clear water and a white sandy bottom.

Madum Sø is approximately 200 hectares in size and up to 7 metres deep in the middle.

    Read more about Madum Sø

Frueskoen – the forest’s rare botanical jewel

Among the old, crooked beech trees of Bjergeskoven hides one of Denmark’s rarest plants: Frueskoen.

This rare orchid thrives here because of the calcareous soil, which is so characteristic of Rold Skov’s geology. If you want to see its striking yellow flowers, you should plan your visit for early June, when it is usually in full bloom on the bright forest floor.

Please note that Frueskoen is extremely vulnerable and fully protected. It is therefore protected by a fence, allowing the few plants to survive undisturbed.

The history and legends of Rold Skov

Rold Skov is not only a natural area. The forest also holds stories of human life, work, fear and survival through time.

There was activity in the area as early as the Bronze Age. The landscape is scattered with burial mounds, and especially Svinehøjene and the 50 burial mounds at Rebild Bakker bear witness to early settlement.

In the 1800s, Rold Skov was so large and impenetrable that, according to the stories, it served as a refuge for outlaws. The tales of Røverne fra Rold are still a central part of local cultural history.

The forest also plays a role in more recent Danish history. Deep inside the area near Thingbæk Kalkminer lies Koldkrigsmuseet REGAN Vest. The bunker was built in the 1960s as a nuclear-secure facility for the Danish government and royal family. Today, REGAN Vest is a museum offering a unique insight into one of Denmark’s greatest secrets.

    Activities in Rold Skov

Rold Skov offers many opportunities for outdoor activities all year round. You can hike along marked trails, cycle through the forest, visit lakes, springs and streams, or explore the forest’s many stories.

    Hiking and running

There is a wide selection of marked routes in and around Rold Skov. Some are suitable for short walks, while others take you through larger parts of the landscape.

    • Rebild Bakker Ruten, marked with white arrows, is Denmark’s first internationally recognised route.
    • Gravlev Ådal Ruten, marked with red arrows, has been named one of Denmark’s hiking routes.

    Cycling and mountain biking

Rold Skov is also a popular area for cyclists and mountain bikers. The forest contains some of Denmark’s best and most challenging mountain bike routes, including the well-known 24-timers MTB-rute.

    Winter experiences

In winter, the hilly terrain and the forest’s geographical location provide good opportunities for skiing. The area is considered one of the best places for skiing in Denmark when the weather and snow conditions allow it.

Plan your visit to Rold Skov

If you want the best overview of experiences, routes and practical information in Rold Skov, you can find inspiration on RebildPorten’s website.

Here, we have gathered suggestions for hiking routes, cycle routes, attractions, nature sites and good stops along the way. You can read more about, among other things, Rebild Bakker, Rold Skov’s springs and lakes, Troldeskoven, hiking routes, mountain biking and other experiences in the area.

National Park Rebild Bakker and Rold Skov

    20.94 km

Rebild Bakker is a beautiful hilly heath land with an exciting history, located just a 30-minute drive south of Aalborg. Regardless of the season, you are guaranteed a beautiful experience: in the spring everything is blooming, in the summer the heather flowers cover the hills like a purple carpet, in the fall the landscape is filled by beautiful red, brown and yellow colours, and in the winter the landscape is left in the dark or covered by a duvet of snow.

The Nature in the National Park Rebild Bakker

Rebild Bakker is completely unique and offers both high points, beautiful views, springs and creeks. Move your way up the hills and enjoy the experience of being high above the landscape. A fun fact about the hills is that they are actually "fake", created by glacial gorges in the sides of the creeks. On the open fields of Rebild Bakker you can find a variety of vegetation, and throughout the year the hills are covered by heather flowers, crowberries, blueberries, cranberries, juniper berries, beech trees and much more.

From Sønderkol, which is one of the areas' highest points located 102 metres above sea level, there is a spectacular view of Lindenborg Ådal, as well as the unique hills, the many hiking paths and the grazing sheep that are helping maintain the beautiful area. The lime-rich underground has created countless streams where the clearest groundwater leaks out from the chalk in the soil. The many streams have created a beautiful network of watercourses that flow through the beautiful area. On the other side of Lindenborg Ådal you can experience Denmark's most distinctive museum, Thingbæk Kalkminer, which is definitely worth a visit.

The National Park Rebild Bakker is especially known for its 4th of July festivities, where Danes and Danish-Americans celebrate the American independence day at the world's largest, and only, official 4th of July event hosted outside of the US. If you would like to know more about the Danes' emigration to the US and the 4th of July celebration, you should definitely visit Top Karen's house. The area around Rebild Bakker is a very exciting place to visit due to its long nature and culture histories.

    Rold Skov

As a part of the National Park Rebild Bakker you can find Rold Skov, which at the size of 80 km2 (or 8.000 acres) is Denmark's largest forest. The forest also has exciting culture and nature histories to tell. These include ancient monuments such as burial mounds from the Bronze Stone Age and the Bronze Age, stories about sinkholes and the robbers from Rold.
