Ulriksholm Castle is linked to several generations of illegitimate royal children. The estate was a gift from King Christian IV to his illegitimate son Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve, who received it in 1645 after the king had a new main building constructed and named the estate after him.

Around 100 years later, Ulriksholm once again played a role in royal affairs. King Frederick V’s mistress, Madame Hansen, was sent to Ulriksholm to give birth in secrecy. She had a total of five children with the king, four of whom were daughters who grew up. The daughters were later married into the upper middle class and received financial support from the state. Kølstrup Church, located opposite the castle, provides the setting for both baptisms and burials in the story of the illegitimate royal children associated with Ulriksholm.
