The Old Bridge over the Little Belt

    0.53 km

The Old Little Belt Bridge: From Jutland to Funen across the Little Belt

The Old Little Belt Bridge is located in the heart of Denmark, just a stone’s throw from Fredericia. The bridge, often described as an architectural gem, was completed in 1935 and was the first fixed link between Jutland and Funen. Today, the Little Belt Bridge is an integral part of life around the Little Belt, and every day trains, cars, cyclists, and pedestrians cross the bridge while enjoying the beautiful view.

Walk on the Little Belt Bridge with Bridgewalking Lillebælt

The Old Little Belt Bridge also offers a very special attraction that can only be experienced in very few places in the world. On the Old Little Belt Bridge, you can take part in a bridge walk—so-called bridgewalking—with Bridgewalking Lillebælt.

Here you get a truly unique opportunity to walk on the Little Belt Bridge—something that can only be experienced in three other places in the world! It is a very special experience to walk across the Little Belt at a height of 60 meters in the upper part of the bridge’s structure while enjoying the magnificent view.

The history of the Old Little Belt Bridge

The Old Little Belt Bridge was constructed between 1925 and 1935 and was initially simply called the Little Belt Bridge. The structure itself was a significant engineering achievement in the interwar period, and with the simultaneous introduction of new express trains, travel time between Jutland and the capital was significantly reduced.

When you go bridgewalking, you get up close to the structure, and the high architectural standard becomes even more evident when seen at close range.

The pilots were the crew of a British Avro Lancaster bomber that was shot down by a German fighter, as they were en route back to their base in England.

The British Embassy in Copenhagen, the Telegraph Regiment, soldiers associations and civilians place flowers at the monument on the anniversary of the tragedy.

The memorial is the only one in the municipality of Fredericia for Allied participation in WW2.

    Bridgewalking – An unforgettable experience

    1.81 km

    Bridgewalking across Little Belt

Go on a bridge walk on the Old Little Belt Bridge with Bridgewalking Lillebælt and experience Little Belt and the surrounding area from a whole new angle. Bridgewalking is a very special activity that can only be tried in four places in the world, and the only place in Europe is on the old Little Belt Bridge, which links Fredericia and Middelfart, Jutland and Funen. Book your next outing with Bridgewalking Lillebælt for an unforgettable experience.

    The Little Belt Bridge experience

An adrenaline rush and spectacular views of Little Belt, Fredericia and Middelfart are guaranteed when you're at the top of the Old Little Belt Bridge, 60 metres above sea level.

Each bridge walk is led by a guide from Bridgewalking Lillebælt, who will tell you about the bridge’s construction, the area’s history and the surrounding scenery. If you're lucky, you might even spot a few porpoises – Little Belt's very own little whale. Little Belt is home to one of the world's densest populations of porpoises. Bridgewalking also brings you up close to the special steel construction of the Old Little Belt Bridge, and you'll feel the whole bridge vibrate as heavy freight trains and fast express trains pass beneath you on the bridge's railway tracks.

    Try bridgewalking alone or together

Bridgewalking is a fantastic activity for individuals, couples and groups of all sizes. On a Bridgewalking Lillebælt bridge walk, visitors are sent onto the bridge in groups of up to 20 people, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t get a more intimate experience with your friends, partner, spouse, or whomever else you have chosen to share the experience with. Even if you walk in a group for safety reasons, bridgewalking doesn’t have to feel like a group activity. Time on the bridge is spent enjoying the experience and listening your guide's captivating stories! You can therefore easily do a bridge walk on your own.

Bridgewalking Lillebælt: The perfect group activity

Because visitors go bridgewalking in groups, a bridgewalk on the Old Little Belt Bridge with Bridgewalking Lillebælt is the perfect destination for your next group trip. Go bridgewalking as your next family outing, friends outing or company outing, or walk across Little Belt as part of your corporate event or teambuilding trip. The options are endless, and Bridgewalking Lillebælt and their guides are always on hand to create the perfect setting for your trip.

    Bridgewalking all year round

Bridgewalking Lillebælt arranges trips all year round, so there is plenty of opportunity to experience Little Belt in all the seasons. Try bridgewalking in autumn, when the leaves from the many trees on both sides of the belt cover the coastline in an explosion of reds, or see how nature appears more rugged from the top of the bridge in winter.

If you've already tried bridgewalking, there's no reason why you can't enjoy a completely new and unique experience every time you go on a bridgewalk across Little Belt. As Bridgewalking Lillebælt's guides themselves say: No two trips across Little Belt are the same, and there are always more stories to tell!

    Information about bridgewalking

Your walk on the bridge starts at Bridgewalking Lillebælt's welcome centre at Galsklintvej 2 in Middelfart. Here Bridgewalking Lillebælt's knowledgeable tour guides will welcome you and prepare you for the fantastic trip you are about to embark on. Together you'll walk from the welcome centre to the Old Little Belt Bridge, where you'll be connected to a safety system – and then it's uphill from there!

The walk is about 2.5 km long, and it is a requirement that participants are in reasonably good physical shape, as there are some steps along the way. No items are allowed on the bridge, and all pockets must be emptied. You are therefore not allowed to bring phones or cameras on the tour – but don't worry, your guide will bring a phone and will take photos of you along the way, which you can download afterwards. You can lock your small belongings, such as your wallet, keys or phone, in a safety box while you're on the bridge.

    Tickets, prices and parking

Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at the welcome centre and online. We recommend that you buy tickets online to make sure you get the tour you want.

Free parking: Parking is available at Galsklintvej 2, 5500 Middelfart, right next to the welcome centre.

Food and drink at Bridgewalking Lillebælt

You can buy hot and cold drinks to enjoy before or after your walk on the bridge. These are sold at the welcome centre, where you can also see a small exhibition about the area surrounding Little Belt and the Old Little Belt Bridge and buy various souvenirs from Bridgewalking Lillebælt. The welcome centre also has tables and benches where you can enjoy a packed lunch, a fire pit with seating and a large nature playground. It is not possible to buy food from Bridgewalking Lillebælt.

    The gardens at Hindsgavl Castel

    2.7 km

Baroque and romance in the shade of old trees

You walk in through an avenue of tall, old trees, and the sound of traffic quickly fades. Hindsgavl Castle Park sits as a green pocket of 40,000 square metres between the castle and the Little Belt, and entry to the park is free, even though the park belongs to Hindsgavl Castle.

The park was laid out around 1750 as a formal baroque garden with symmetrical avenues, terraces and ponds. In the early 1800s it was redesigned in the romantic style, with winding paths and looser planting – a tradition still visible in the landscape today. Several of the old trees date from the original layout, and you can trace both the earlier and the later garden as you move through the park.

From the romantic period, the tea pavilion “Sorgenfri” and the Hermitage remain. The pavilion carries verses written by Hans Christian Andersen, who often visited Hindsgavl. Both stand as possible stops on your walk through the park, telling of a time when manor gardens were meant as places for both reflection and company.

The castle park suits a quiet walk, whether you come alone, with family, or as part of a longer tour along the Little Belt. The terrain is flat and easy to walk.

Food and drink brought from home may not be consumed in the park, and dogs must be kept on a leash.

Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to Hindsgavl Deer Park or a walk further out towards Hindsgavl Point on the Little Belt.

    5.37 km

The Gunpowder Tower in Fredericia - A Part of the Unique History

The iconic yellow building is located near Østerstrand beach and Fredericia Health Center and is part of the old military hub in the fortress town.

    Fredericia’s Oldest Military Building

The Gunpowder Tower is Fredericia’s oldest military building and one of the city’s oldest structures. The tower was constructed in 1675 in a typical Baroque style, modeled after the gunpowder tower in the Citadel, Copenhagen, which stood until 1741.

The tower is built on two floors with shutters facing the Little Belt, allowing the fortress to be monitored and defended in case of hostile intrusion from the waterside.

Storing Gunpowder in the Fortress Town

The Gunpowder Tower was used to store the fortress’s ammunition, such as gunpowder, hand grenades, cannonballs, musket balls, torches, and more. The explosive contents meant that great emphasis was placed on safety in and around the building. To minimize the risk of sparks, all floor planks and most other timber in the building were assembled with wooden pegs instead of iron nails.

    "No Swearing Allowed"

At the same time, there were rules about behavior in and around the building. Notices encouraged the fortress’s soldiers to be cautious around the explosive materials, and it was explicitly forbidden to use “improper language,” such as swearing or cursing near the gunpowder.

The Gunpowder Tower of Fredericia - Renovations Over Time

The Gunpowder Tower has undergone several renovations since its construction (in 1746, 1865, and 1992).

Experience Fredericia on a smaller scale in the Historical Miniature Town

Have you ever wondered what Fredericia would look like in miniature?

In the Historical Miniature Town, you'll find the answer! The Historical Miniature Town showcases Fredericia as it was in 1849, at a scale of 1:10. Walk among the small houses and discover what lies behind the next street corner. Here, you'll experience Fredericia in a whole new way.

    Volunteers behind the detailed buildings

The miniature town's houses have incredible details, and behind them lies a huge construction effort. The houses are primarily built by volunteers who also handle renovations and repairs. Because the buildings stand outside all year round, they are exposed to weathering, and the houses therefore receive regular makeovers to look as beautiful as possible during the summer season.

Visit the Miniature Builders' workshop at Madsby Activity Park

Small bricks and the correct paint color - nothing is left to chance when the Miniature Builders construct and restore.

The group of volunteers calls themselves the Miniature Builders and is based in Madsby Activity Park, where the curious can drop by the workshop and see the massive work behind the buildings in the Historical Miniature Town. Here, they burn a wide range of bricks themselves, each the size of the tip of a finger, and mix the exact paint color.

The Miniature Builders receive help from Fredericia's Local Archive to ensure that the Historical Miniature Town is historically accurate.

    Practical information

Read practical information about The Historical Mini-Town here!

Take the Madsby Train to the Miniature Town - entrance included in the ticket

When you visit Madsbyparken, you can spot the little Madsby Train.

The train has one stop on the route, namely at the Historical Miniature Town, and when you buy a ticket for the Madsby Train, entrance to the Miniature Town is included. You can therefore get off and experience the Miniature Town before hopping on the next train back to Madsby Activity Park.

The Historical Miniature Town - a part of Madsbyparken

The Historical Miniature Town is located in the middle of Madsbyparken, Fredericia's large nature and activity park. Here you'll find experiences and activities for the whole family!
