Nakskov is a beautifully preserved medieval town with a cosy local atmosphere, charming streets and a rich history. It’s the perfect place to combine city experiences with nature adventures.
For centuries, Nakskov has been a key trading town – thanks to its location by Nakskov Fjord. It flourished during the Middle Ages and later became known for shipping, industry and sugar production. Today, the Nakskov Sugar Factory and wind turbine manufacturer Vestas continue to play important roles in the town.
Cosy town life
Stroll through the town and explore local shops, cafés, restaurants and the vibrant town square.
At Axeltorv, relax at Café Smil with a cup of coffee brewed from local Ubuntu beans, freshly baked bread, and a view of the equestrian statue of King Christian X – the first of its kind in Denmark and a symbol of the country’s liberation after WWII.
Across the square you’ll find the Old Pharmacy (Det Gamle Apotek), now home to a tourist information centre and a gallery showcasing ceramics, paintings and glasswork by local artisans. The friendly staff are ready to help you discover even more local treasures.
Throughout the year, Nakskov is alive with markets, concerts, festivals, guided tours and a cosy Christmas town on the square.
Nakskov’s cultural heritage
Nakskov has held town rights since the 12th century and was once one of Denmark’s richest towns, thriving on trade, fishing and industry.
Visit the local museums – including the House of History (Historiens Hus), Denmark’s Sugar Museum and the Nakskov Maritime Museum – or step into the impressive St. Nicholas Church, built in the 1200s with a 70-meter tower visible from afar.
Wandering through town, you’ll see medieval traces in the old merchants’ houses, timber-framed buildings, warehouses and narrow alleys.
By the harbour promenade stands the Queen’s Warehouse (Dronningens Pakhus) from 1589, originally used to store grain for the crown.
You’ll also discover three large face sculptures by artist Thomas Kadziola, who also created the monumental artwork Dodekalitten on Lolland’s north coast. Art lovers should also stop by Jernbanegade to see a red building sculpture by renowned artist Per Kirkeby.
Nature nearby
Nakskov is located near the stunning Nakskov Fjord Nature Park. Don’t miss Hestehovedet beach – home to one of Denmark’s longest bathing jetties and some of the country’s warmest waters. Great for summer and winter bathing! You can also try stand-up paddling, kayaking or kitesurfing with Kitesurf & Paddle Lolland.
In summer, enjoy ice cream from the local kiosk, play mini golf, let the kids loose on the Sælen playground, or have lunch or dinner at Restaurant Fjorden with fjord views. Overnight options include Nakskov Fjord Camping.
Continue your journey to Langø and Albuen
Just south of Nakskov is Langø, where you can enjoy fresh seafood at Langø Grill & Fiskebar, swim by the marina’s bathing jetty and explore handmade crafts at Tangladen. Stay overnight in historic surroundings at the manor house Store Riddersborg, with a scenic view of the fjord.
End your journey at Albuen Strand – a unique beach peninsula with beautiful hiking trails and stunning views where Nakskov Fjord meets the Langelandsbælt.
