A forest inspired by a paper cutting
H.C. Andersen Forest is unlike a traditional woodland. From the air, the trees form a face surrounded by rays, while the eyes, nose and mouth appear as open clearings within the forest. The design is based on Andersen’s paper cutting Sun Face and has been part of the project from the very beginning.
Although the full shape can only be appreciated from above, its influence can still be seen throughout the landscape. Rows of trees extend outwards like rays of the sun, while clearings and open spaces break up the woodland.
Exploring the forest
The forest is a popular place for walking and running, with paths leading through oak woodland as well as more open areas. Unlike many forests, the trees are spaced widely apart in several sections, allowing sunlight to reach the ground and creating open views across the landscape.
Cattle graze on the surrounding grassland, helping to maintain the area's open character and contributing to the landscape the forest was designed to create.
Along the way, you'll pass through clearings, rows of trees and open grassy areas. This mix of woodland and open landscape gives the forest a very different feel from the denser woodlands found elsewhere.
An outing for the whole family
Near the main entrance, you'll find picnic and seating areas, while children can enjoy a nature playground inspired by the Sun Face motif. With its network of paths, play facilities and wide open green spaces, the forest is well suited to both a short stroll and a longer day out.
