The intention was to get residents to take up fruit growing, so the new city plan consisted of long houses with a facade and a small front garden facing the street and deep plots at the back where fruit trees would be planted. After initial skepticism, people embraced fruit growing.
At the same time, the shipbuilding town of Troense emerged at the well-protected anchorage Pilekrogen, which, with shelter from all winds and a good water depth, provided a basis for both shipbuilding and anchoring ships during lay-up periods. The Møller family of shipbuilders, which has numbered around 30 master shipbuilders, originated in Troense, where they built several ships.
Many of Troense's small ships were part of the so-called 'pear trade', where locally grown fruit was shipped to other markets, not least the capital Copenhagen.
