    Kongehøjen at Voldstedlund

    10.66 km

Excavations in 1961, and the following restoration of the long dolmens, showed it was built in the middle of the New Stone Age, approx. 3.200 B.C. So it was erected long before Denmark became a real kingdom, which was during the Viking Period. The most interesting aspect of the long dolmen, is the almost undamaged stone chain (1) with a total of 62 stones along the foot of the mound, as well as the two very well-preserved tombs, which is hidden in the mound. A reason for the unique condition of the dolmen could be that it was listed already in 1892, and perhaps also because the stories say that it would bode ill for those who broke the stone chain or disturbed the area in any way,

The Cold War Museum REGAN Vest

    31.57 km

The museum, which is part of the Nordjyske Museer (The Historical Museum of Northern Jutland), offers several different experiences in addition to the main attraction itself: the nuclear-safe bunker, which was built in secret in Rold Skov in the years 1962-68. Buy tickets to the Cold War Museum REGAN Vest.

    The Bunker

It is not a military facility, but the bunker was supposed to house the government, officials and the incumbent regent in the event of a nuclear war. It was from here that Denmark had to be led through a crisis situation. The bunker was the last bastion, and if REGAN Vest fell, so did Denmark - and with it Danish democracy.

The bunker stands untouched today and is fully furnished with all the original interiors, and when the museum opens in early 2023, it will be available for guided tours.

    The Engineer Villa

The entrance to the bunker itself is hidden among the trees of the forest, but in front of it and facing the road is a yellow brick villa, which also helped to hide the bunker's entrance. The Master Engineer lived here with his family. It was he who had the daily supervision of the bunker.

The villa is decorated as it might have looked in 1980, when a family with father, mother and two children lived there. As part of the museum experience, you can explore their homes yourself, and on interactive screens you can hear individual family members talk about their daily lives during the Cold War.

    The Exhibition Building

In addition to the bunker and the yellow villa, the Cold War Museum REGAN Vest also consists of a newly built welcome and exhibition building, where you will find an exhibition that tells about the Cold War, Danish preparedness in crisis situations and about the bunker's construction.

Finally, the public will be able to walk along new paths on the chalk hill above the bunker facilities. A tour that gives a good sense of the size and function of the bunker. You can already join guided walks in the area, including a glimpse of the distinctive entrance tunnel to the bunker.

    Bramslev Bakker

    11.98 km

Bramslev Bakker is a 300 hectares preserved area right by Mariager Fjord, with access through marked trails.

The view from the parking place at Bramslev Bakker is one of the most spectacular sights in Northern Jutland. The steep slopes are an abrupt distinction from the more level and higher placed agricultural area which surrounds the fjord.

The fjord is a so-called tunnel valley, whose formation was finally completed by colossal meltwater streams under the ice 20,000 years ago. However, studies suggest that a valley existed here already in the Tertiary period over 1 million years ago, and that this valley was deepened by the advancing ice.

In 2017 a new path was established - the Panoramaroute - a certified route, awarded for it's spectacular nature (among other things). Along the route, you'll find Bramslev Bakker Nature Hotel and Hotel BramslevGaard if you are in need for a refreshment.

Below Bramslev Bakker is a lovely beach, awarded the White Flag. Here, bathing is possible from the water's edge and the bathing bridge. The White Flag is a replacement for the Blue Flag and is still a sign of a good bathing spot with clean water - it also means that dogs are welcome.

During the summer, Bramslev Bakker is also where the paddle steamer, Svanen moors, before a trip round Mariager Fjord.

2014 – Our Time at the Museum

Our time has found its place in the museum. Queen Margrethe's Street, capturing a moment from the year 2014, is a bustling street with facade shops. Here, you'll discover a tanning salon, 7-Eleven, a bank, a pizzeria, and the legendary pub, Bent J, where the scent of smoke and spilled beer still lingers.

The 2014 street also features two apartments. Step inside the home of single woman Rikke and visit the rainbow family. Through interviews in the homes, meet the residents who share their lives, including stories about children, work, and everyday routines.

    Denmark in the 70s

Travel back in time to the 1970s in a neighborhood with streets, apartments, shops, courtyards, and workshops from that era. In the 70s quarter, explore establishments like Pouls Radio, the radio and TV store, the convenience store, the butcher, the paint and wallpaper shop, the kindergarten, and the hairdresser. In the apartments, peek into the lives of a nuclear family, a collective, a hippie couple, and a single mother.

In the backyard, you'll find a Volkswagen and the plumber's Citroën – explore the moped workshop, scout meeting place, or backyard toilets adorned with the poetry of the time.
    1950-1974: Welfare and Liberalism

Popular Cars and New Times in the 1920s

Move on to 1927, where the city has become modern with cars, sidewalks, streetlights, telephone wires, and gable advertisements. The quarter in The Old Town has a hardware store, a bookstore, Schou's soap house, a post office, a telephone exchange, and several residences from before the 1930s crisis halted Denmark. Experience the authentic car dealership 'Automobilforretning Carl Christensen' with its own workshop.

Encounter beautiful vintage cars, exhibition spaces, a shop with spare parts, and workshops for engine renovation and bicycle repairs. Get up close to the infancy of motoring and learn about the various fascinating vehicles of the time.

Once Upon a Time Before 1900

Here, you'll meet The Old Town in H.C. Andersen's time and even further back with half-timbered structures and buildings from all over Denmark. The oldest part of The Old Town resembles a small Danish market town with houses, gardens, residences, shops, and workshops. These buildings originate from cities throughout Denmark and have been reconstructed in The Old Town.

Stop and chat with the baker's assistant, farmhand, and street organ man, but be careful – you might be tasked with fetching water from the well or carrying waste to the dung heap.

Take a ride in the horse-drawn carriages or make a good deal in the historical shops. At Restaurant Gæstgivergården, enjoy a wide selection of warm and cold lunch dishes as well as open-faced sandwiches, all inspired by historical cookbooks.

There is life in the streets of the towns with people, trams, buses and ships in the harbour. Also on the railway line there is a brisk traffic. More than 80 trains show 100 years of railway history with both steam locomotives and modern high-velocity trains. They all stop at the main station which has 11 tracks.

    Danish railway system

You can also experience the East Jutland railway line in mini size, where the guests themselves can make the trains run by pressing various buttons. There is sound and light, which provides an authentic atmosphere, when the trains stand still in the railway station in Hadsten and Lerbjerg and drive through market towns, hills and streams. The makers of the model railway have paid great attention to the details of the buildings and the surroundings, which are based on the archive material of DSB.

    For the kids!

For the children it is possible to run the trains themselves in the small railway lines in the café or try to build houses or trains for the Lego track.
