  The Funen Village - Open Air Museum

  All buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are sourced on Funen. Most are built in half-timbering and with thatched roofs. The village is surrounded by fields and gardens, and you can meet livestock in stables, on pasture or in the fields, ploughing the arable land with the farmer. The Funen Village tells the story of both past and future, sustainability and community.

  An experience for the whole family
  The Funen Village has something for all the family, young and old. Children and young people under 18 don't have to pay admission, so get going! Throughout the season you can enjoy activities such as horse-drawn carriage rides, various village tales, travelling theatre and many other exciting activities. You can also learn how to milk cows, make clothes from flax, how honey is made in the village and much more.   History programmes and summer evenings
  When you visit the Funen Village, you can listen to stories told by the volunteers. They perform the roles of cooks, coachmen, field workers, candle drippers, goose maidens and other village residents. As you listen to the stories, you can watch the characters as they go about their daily chores. This creates a unique and special atmosphere for you to experience what it was like to live in the 18th century. In addition to the many volunteers and activities, the Funen Village is open every Thursday in July, where you can enjoy the summer atmosphere of the village.

  The Fairy Tale Garden in Odense

  You will find the fairytale garden by Odense Å, just behind Odense Cathedral and Odense City Hall. Via a nice wooden bridge, you can cross the river over to the rotunda, a small circular island in the garden. Depending on the season, the beds here are bursting with spring bulbs, dahlias and perennials, and you can sit on the benches and enjoy the view. The cosy wooden staircase along the water invites you to sit and watch the water and the ducks.

  In 1949, the H.C. Andersen statue, created by Louis Hasselris, was placed in the garden. Close by in the river, Erik Heide's sculpture The Paper Boat from 1985 sails along, and there are several other sculptures around the park.

  The pergola on the rotunda, the bridges in the garden and the Chinese wall have been designed and executed in quality materials, worthy of a town hall garden. The original pergola showcased a beautiful pattern of diamond-shaped beds.

  The garden was laid out in 1876 by the Reading Association, and initially, it was closed to ordinary visitors. The reading association was a library for wealthy citizens, and only people with access cards could visit. In 1942, the Reading Association transferred the garden to Odense Municipality, and a completely new park emerged. Behind the project were the garden architects C. Th. Sørensen and P. Wad, in collaboration with architect B. Helweg-Møller, who was the architect of the town hall.

  Odense ZOO - Zoological gardens

  A zoo for the whole family
  Odense ZOO is a zoological garden for the whole family – with lots of experiences for both little ones and adults. When you visit the zoo, you will surely get a nice and educational day filled with different experiences and lots of fun. While the younger ones play, the adults can enjoy a nice meal or a cup of coffee. Afterwards you can continue the tour around the garden which offers adventures for the whole family with many kinds of animals.

  Experience the different animals
  In Odense ZOO there are many different animals – maybe some you already know and maybe some more exotic ones. In the garden you can experience all kinds of animals like the Siberian tiger, exotic birds and the manatee below the water. When you tour the garden and see all the animals, you will experience a quite unique atmosphere and scenery which is a perfect fit according to which animals you come across – from the tropical South America to the Antarctic cold. You will also see the zebras and giraffes on the savannah and the turtles in The House of Darwin. There are many different animals in Odense ZOO, both the dangerous and wild and the smaller and softer animals.

  Up close
  There are lots of options when you want to get totally close when seeing the different kinds of animals. In Odense ZOO you can handfeed the big giraffes and during the summer holidays you get to visit the island of the lemurs where you will participate in feeding the perky animals. You can of course also watch as the zookeepers feed and train the animals in the zoo. as you can imagine, there are many opportunities for you to listen, see and learn when you visit the zoological garden with the very special and cozy atmosphere.

  Go tree-top-walking
  When visiting Odense ZOO, you have got an incredible opportunity to go to Bøgetoppen (top of the beeches). The trip in Bøgetoppen offers a walk in the canopy of the beautiful beech forest. In the canopy there are nine different platforms which are all connected by suspension bridges. Here you will get to experience a trip in a height of six to twelve meters above the ground! A very fun experience for the whole family when you get take the 250 meters long walk in the trees. A walk which offers both a beautiful view and maybe even some challenges. On the trip you will get to test your trivia knowledge in a digital quiz about Danish nature. In the quiz you might get some new information or maybe you get to beat your family in the fun game of who has the most knowledge about animals and insects in the canopy or the forest floor below.

  Botanical Garden

  The History of the Garden
  The Garden was founded in 1948 by the teacher Arne Emdal and was originally owned by the Odense School Authority. It was named the "School Botanical Garden" and was used for botany education and plant distribution. Later, the garden was taken over by Odense's park department.

  A Botanical Treasure for All
  The Garden is now an inspiration for garden owners and a popular destination that offers a unique botanical experience. Visitors can admire an impressive variety of perennials and Denmark's largest collection of birch and fern plants from around the world. There is also an extensive assortment of cranesbill and daylilies. The old-fashioned, densely flowering, and fragrant roses are a delight for both the eye and the nose. All plants are labeled with their name, variety, and place of origin.

  The Path to the Garden
  To reach the garden, you can either follow the stream path across the red bridge or start the journey from the parking lot in the allotment gardens and follow a picturesque path along the stream. In the facility, you will find a water station, a toilet that is open during the summer months, and a canoe mooring area.

  Hans C. Andersen's Childhood Home

  The house opened to the public in 1930. The cobblestone street sets the stage for a visit to the past.

  The house contains the very humble rooms which comprised the home of the great fairy tale writer and to which his dearest memories of childhood are attached. Don't confuse this house with the actual museum in the historic quarter, which you can visit also. The rooms mimic Hans Christian Andersen's descriptions in his autobiography and give you a good impression of the poverty that marked his early years.

  The charming backyard garden, which was established in 2018, is filled with plants and flowers that Andersen mentioned in his writings, like docks, an elderflower bush and more. The garden is small and surrounded by brick walls separating you from the neighbours. The atmosphere is calm, and it is hard to remember that you are standing in the city centre of Denmark's 3rd largest city.

  Vintapperstræde by the Latin Quarter

  Vintapperstrædet consists of 25 retail and office spaces, all of which are charming and historically decorated, as well as a wide selection of restaurants.

  Vintapperstrædet's street association ensures a good atmosphere and cosy events throughout the year, with Magic Days, H. C. Andersen Festival, Saturday Summer Jazz, Halloween and Flower Festival, among others, being periods where extra effort is put into decorating the small alley.

  The approximately 100 metre long street was opened in 1977 and was named after Marinus Lytjens Vinhandel in Slotsgade, to which the alley served as a backyard until then. Especially in the evening hours, Vintapperstrædet lives up to its name as many people choose to make their way past the cosy restaurants, bars and cafés that line the small alley.

  Three exhibitions promise wonderful experiences

  The newest building (2013) houses the “Fyn – midt i verden” (FYN - Centre of the Universe) exhibition, which presents an interpretation of Danish and world history from a Funen perspective. Here, the past is brought into the present with a cornucopia of scenographic effects, lots of sound, light and video clips and an interactive game square.

  Falk Gøyes Gård (1646) provides the setting for the “Byens Liv – Odense i Middelalder og renæssance” (Life of the City - Odense in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance) exhibition, and in the almshouses “Pernille Lykkes Boder” (Pernille Lykke’s Dwellings) (1617), you will find interiors from the 17th century and the years from 1935–45 respectively.

  Experience history with all senses
  The children's museum is for history-loving children between the ages of 4 and 11, and is a brand new way of discovering the past, making it even more exciting. Everything must be touched and tested in the two exhibitions.

  Histotoriet is the quaint and educational house with genuine museum artifacts for inquisitive children. The children's backyard is a mini town environment a lá 1890 with a carpentry shop, an apartment, a water pump, chickens, dress up clothes and other fun stuff.

  Art Museum Brandts in Odense

  The Danish Railway Museum

  Feel the history as you get up close and personal with the large locomotives and beautiful old carriages. Let your imagination soar and play engine driver in the cabs of the impressive steam locomotives.
  
  Take a seat on the uncomfortable benches in the old passenger carriages, peek inside the royal saloon carriages and admire the snow plough from back in the days of ice winter. You can also set the little model trains in motion and study the fascinating ferry models.

  Hop aboard the mini train
  At the Danish Railway Museum we have our own miniature train. The mini train takes you through the Danish cultural landscape and past child-sized railway history environments. The train departs several times a day

  Experiences for the little ones
  Younger visitors will love the Locomotive Master Bus's workshop and the Children's Railway Station - a child-sized railway station with a ticket office, control tower and space to play. Also visit the outdoor playground where you can explore the large steam locomotive and slide from the top of the water tower.

  Ride a vintage train
  It's a very special experience to stand close to the steam locomotive, enveloped in smoke, steam and the smell of coal. At the Danish Railway Museum, we have our own railway tracks and station on the museum grounds. You can take a trip on the vintage train on selected days throughout the year. We operate both railcars and steam trains. Rides at the museum can be seen on our website under "Activities".
