A historic windmill in Sønderborg
Slotsmøllen in Sønderborg has a history of wind power and milling dating back to 1791. The present windmill was built between 1874 and 1875 and is known for its distinctive appearance, with large sails and a boat-shaped cap.
The name Slotsmøllen comes from its location in the former castle gardens. Here, you can discover a piece of Sønderborg's history and take a closer look at a windmill that has stood on this site for more than 150 years.
The cap, sails and fantail
Take a closer look at Slotsmøllen's distinctive design. The boat-shaped cap and fantail are key features of both its appearance and its workings. The fantail forms part of the mechanism that automatically turns the cap to face the wind.
The windmill's large sails and mechanical details offer an insight into a time when wind power was used to drive milling machinery.
A 14-tonne windmill cap
Slotsmøllen underwent extensive restoration between 2020 and 2021. One of the most remarkable parts of the project involved the windmill's cap, which weighs around 14 tonnes.
The restoration is an important part of the story of how this historic windmill has been preserved.
