Moesgaard Museum

Danish history told with immediacy

Moesgaard Museum is beautifully situated in the countryside south of Aarhus in East Jutland. The museum is known for its modern and sensory exhibitions, where you can get up close and personal with people from the past.

Here, you can journey through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age – told through scenography, sound, light and original archaeological finds. The exhibitions bring history to life and make it relevant, whether you visit the museum with family, friends or on your own.

The museum conducts world-class research and communicates both Danish and international archaeology at a high academic level.

Meet the Grauballe Man

One of the museum's most famous finds is the Grauballe Man – one of the world's best-preserved bog bodies. The find dates from the Iron Age and provides a unique insight into the life and rituals of the past.

The experience is both fascinating and thought-provoking and, for many, one of the highlights of a visit to Moesgaard Museum.

The Stairway of Evolution

The Evolution Staircase at Moesgaard Museum is a central part of the architecture, taking you on a journey back in time. Here you will meet your family – seven human species, with Lucy, at approximately 3.2 million years old, being the oldest. All seven are very lifelike figures, anatomically correct reconstructions of our ancestors. So stop by, look your ancestors in the eye and be impressed by a fantastic encounter.

Get up close to a Viking

When you enter the Viking Age, history really comes to life. Here you can choose to follow a Viking through the Aarhus of that time, which in the Viking Age was called Aros. Life as a Viking presented many challenges. Both in everyday life in Aros and when the large Viking ships set sail for Norway or the exotic Constantinople, now known as Istanbul.

People of the Middle Ages

In the exhibition ‘Deliver us from evil’, you can explore medieval trade and crafts, churches and monasteries, and major crises such as the Black Death, which killed approximately one in three inhabitants. Society was changing, but the Middle Ages were also a time of war and strife, when the power of the Church was almighty. In the exhibition, you follow medieval people through baptism, the creation of the earth and Christian dogma, mortal sins, temptations and into purgatory.

Architecture in harmony with nature

The museum's iconic building was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and is an attraction in itself. The grass-covered roof slopes down into the landscape and serves as a vantage point over the forest and sea.

You can take a walk on the roof and enjoy the view of Aarhus Bay or combine your visit to the museum with a walk in the Marselisborg forests and along the beach.

Current exhibitions

Discover impressive exhibitions from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, among others, and feel a rush of excitement when the different eras suddenly come to life before your eyes. You can explore Bronze Age burial mounds or watch Iron Age farmers make large weapon sacrifices to the gods.

Upcoming exhibitions

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, Moesgaard Museum regularly presents new exhibitions with international perspectives on culture and history. This gives you new reasons to return.
