Take a historical hike
Fresh air and exercise were once essential elements in the treatment of tuberculosis patients. That is why a tuberculosis sanatorium and a network of therapeutic walking trails were established in the hilly landscape right by Vejle Fjord. Here, patients could enjoy the perfect combination of fresh air and gentle activity through carefully prescribed walks along the sanatorium’s dedicated paths.
Today, the trails are used by guests at Hotel Vejlefjord, as well as locals and tourists, for walks and outdoor exercise. The park and surrounding area are open to the public, so everyone is welcome to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.
The scenic therapeutic trails
There are four marked trails to choose from, each ranging between 1.5 and 2.4 kilometres in length. All routes pass through the stunning landscape of Grund Forest, the hotel’s elegant park, and along the shores of Vejle Fjord. Along the way, you will discover a number of historical features, some large and some small, and perhaps seemingly insignificant, but each has played its part in the long and fascinating history of Vejlefjord. You will pass sights such as Grandma’s Bridge, the Kiss-Me-Now Cottage, the therapy garden, and the impressive Træskohage Lighthouse.
Scattered along the routes are 20 wooden benches inscribed with thoughtful quotes. These are known as reflection benches and are designed to encourage peace and contemplation.
Enjoy the beautiful park
The park surrounding the elegant hotel is a magnificent sight. Carefully tended by Vejlefjord’s skilled gardeners, the park slopes gently down towards the fjord and the bathing jetty, offering a divine and colourful setting.
The planting in the park is continuously adapted to ensure a lush and vibrant experience throughout the year. In spring, thousands of blooming bulbs light up the area around the buildings, while in May and July, the century-old rhododendron bushes burst into shades of pink and purple, alongside newer varieties in yellow, white, and bright pink.
Around the garden you will find an outdoor fitness area, seating spots, and cosy corners to relax in.
Be sure to climb the spiral-shaped hill, once used to assess whether patients were ready to be discharged from the sanatorium.
Treat yourself to a meal
After a refreshing walk in the area, you deserve a treat. At the restaurant at Hotel Vejlefjord, you can enjoy delicious à la carte dishes. A buffet with tasty hot and cold options is also frequently available.
