Glud Museum

Explore 350 years of village history

Bring the whole family to Glud Museum and let stories of rural life spark memories, curiosity and conversations across generations. Glud Museum is an open-air museum where the whole family can explore 350 years of village history, from the mid-17th century to the present day. Step into history and discover how people lived in the Danish countryside in a traditional four-winged half-timbered farmhouse, small fishermen’s cottages and smallholdings.

The old farm

The many historic buildings each tell their story. Come into Rasmus Thomesøn’s farmhouse from 1662, where you can have a look in the dark living rooms where alcoves, fireplaces and long tables stood close. In the small fisherman’s house, fishing nets hang in the living rooms and the mattresses are stuffed with seaweed. In the tall transformer tower, you can experience what a revolution electricity was.

Visit the master painter’s house

The local master painter, Søren Knudsen, founded Glud Museum in 1912 and the museum also has Søren Knudsen’s home, Hildesheim, where you can go behind the museum’s history and in many ways, the unusual life of the museum founder.

Children’s Village – village life in the 1940s

At Glud Museum’s Children’s Village, children can step into a village pond setting in a small East Jutland village as it might have looked in the 1940s. Here, they can explore with all their senses, play and discover their surroundings while experiencing history up close.

Visit the Post Office, Hair Salon and Barn, and gain an insight into everyday village life during the Second World War. Children’s Village offers an active museum experience for the whole family, where play and cultural history go hand in hand.

Life in the village throughout the year

There are plenty of exciting events to enjoy at Glud Museum throughout the year. Easter is celebrated with Easter in the Village, while heritage livestock breeds take over the museum during Animal Day (Dyrenes Dag) in spring. The harvest is brought in at Harvest Weekend in August, Plant Day takes place in September, the autumn holidays feature Legends and Myths, and in December, Christmas is celebrated with traditional customs at Christmas in the Village.

During the school summer holidays, Summer in the Village offers activities for the whole family, including children’s activities, a creative workshop, treasure hunts and working craft workshops on selected days. Meet Glud Museum’s skilled volunteers as they demonstrate traditional crafts and handicrafts while sharing stories about life in the Danish countryside in days gone by.

Summer activities full of life

During the summer holidays, swap the queues and crowds of the amusement parks for fresh air, open spaces and plenty of room to play at Glud Museum.

Step back in time and enjoy a range of fun historical activities. Every day, families can take part in cosy hands-on activities, get creative with history-inspired crafts or play their way through the past in the museum’s Touch-and-Try Museum, where everything is meant to be touched.

On selected days, Glud Museum’s skilled volunteers bring history to life in the working workshops, demonstrating traditional crafts and handicrafts. Chat with the knitting ladies, watch the blacksmith at work by the glowing forge and see how yarn is spun on a traditional spinning wheel.

Plan your visit

Glud Museum is open from Easter until the end of October. The museum also opens on selected weekends in the lead-up to Christmas for Christmas in the Villag
