Beautiful castle park by forest and fjord

Next to Boller Castle, just south of Horsens Fjord, you will find Boller Castle Garden.

As you pass through the charming old wrought-iron gate, you are greeted by a variety of fascinating plants arranged in themed gardens, created over more than 25 years by the Horsens Botanical Garden Association. You can explore everything from poisonous medicinal herbs to fig and fruit trees, or take a break on a bench overlooking the lake in the tranquil Japanese garden. If you are lucky, you might even spot one of the park’s small turtles basking in the sun.

 

The flower garden

In the enclosed flower garden, you will find fuchsias, roses, monastic plants, primroses and geraniums, along with the lovely Japanese garden complete with trickling water and rare plant species. You are welcome to bring your own picnic basket and enjoy a meal at the provided tables and benches or bring a blanket and settle down on the grass.

 

Feel the history

The real star of the castle park is the magnificent hollow oak – Jutland’s oldest tree, estimated to be around 1,000 years old. From here, you can enjoy views of Boller Castle and its old moat, where large carp swim lazily about. Boller Castle has a rich history. Among others, the legendary King Christian IV played a colourful role here in the 1600s, which you can read more about on the information board placed in front of the oak.

Visit Boller Castle Park

You can easily combine your visit with an active day out. The castle park is located near the Planet Path, which forms part of the cycling and hiking trails around Horsens Fjord. From the Planet Path, it is about 4 kilometres to the park, and by car, it is approximately 5 kilometres from Horsens. Please note that there is no public access to the castle itself. However, the garden is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00 between 1 April and 15 October.

Boller Castle Park is maintained by volunteers from the Botanical Garden Association, who run the park as a sort of collective allotment garden.
